Ham Exams

NARS conducts monthly ARRL Volunteer Exam sessions at the Tomball Community Center. The Tomball Community Center is located on the southeast corner of Market St. & S. Cherry St. in Tomball. Market St. runs parallel to E. Main St., one block south. E. Main St. is called FM 2920 outside Tomball city limits.

Parking is in the rear (south side) of the building. The entrance is on the S. Cherry St. side of the building. For the GPS enabled, the parking lot is at N30.0961, W95.6150.

Exams are given on the fourth Saturday of every month, with the exception of June, November, and December. Registration and exams start at 8:15 A.M. Exams scheduled for 2008 are January 26, February 23, March 22, April 26, May 24, July 26, August 23, September 27, and October 25.

Bring two forms of identification, one of which must be a photo ID such as drivers license or state identification card issued in lieu of a drivers license. If you are currently licensed, bring your original license and a photocopy. A copy of the license may also be obtained on the web if you have a computer and printer.

If you have previously taken any exam elements, bring any CSCE original documents and photocopies of each. The current exam fee is $14.00. Make checks payable to ARRL VEC. Contact Joe Sokolowski at 281-353-2196 or by email for additional information.

General Meeting

The NARS general membership meeting is held on the third Friday of each month at the Cypress Creek Christian Community Center, 6823 Cypresswood Drive. Meetings will be held in the Annex Building, 2nd floor. Eyball QSO's start about 7:00 P.M. The meeting starts at 7:30 P.M. and usually lasts until about 9:30 P.M.

Board Meeting

The board meets on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30 P.M. in the Ponderosa Fire Station, 17061 Rolling Creek Drive to discuss club business and to set direction for the club. Rolling Creek Drive is located one light west of Ella. Go north about 200 yards on Rolling Creek, and park on the south side of the fire station, NOT in front of the large doors! All members are invited to attend the board meetings. Contact any board member if you need directions or if you want a specific item to be on the agenda.

Reflector

There is an active email reflector on mailman.qth.net. Signup is very easy, and the reflector is quite active. We coordinate club events and activities there, as well as ham radio information and chatter of interest to the community.

Repeaters

NARS operates two open repeaters in the Houston area. Both repeaters are located in the Galleria area. The repeaters cover western Houston from Sugarland in the south to the Tomball-Huffsmith area in the north.

  • 2M 146.660 -600 kHz PL 141.3

  • 70cm 444.375 +5 mHz PL 141.3

Operating Nets

NARS members meet on the air on two nets. The weekly ragchew net meets on 10 meters (28.444) on Monday evenings from 8:00 to 9:00 P.M. CST. This is a moderated net, but is very informal.
Following the 10 meter net, there is a follow-on informal ragchew on 80 meters. The frequency is usually around 3850, but varies according to band conditions and existing QSOs. Walter, KK5LO, usually posts the frequency for the evening on the NARS reflector.

Banquet

The January meeting each year is held at a local banquet facility. The new club officers are inducted, club members accomplishments are recognized, and a great time is had by all. This event is always a highlight of the year, held after the busy holiday season to give us all an opportunity to unwind, enjoy each others company, and spend time with the family.
